Hiker Use of Mountain Summits in Acadia National Park 1999, 2000, and 2001

Jacobi C. 2001. Hiker Use of Mountain Summits in Acadia National Park 1999, 2000, and 2001. Acadia National Park Natural Resources Report Number 2001-8. National Park Service, Acadia National Park. Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor, ME

FIELD WORK: 1999-2001 '... counts show that Acadia Mountain (27/hour), Beech Mountain (30/hour), and Gorham Mountain (34/hour) have the highest number of hikers per hour. Pemetic Mountain (19/hour) and Dorr Mountain (15/hour) have the fewest number of hikers per hour. Volunteers noted an exceptionally high number of hikers reaching the summit of Champlain Mountain (486 hikers) about two weeks after the Precipice Trail opened (peregrine falcon closure). A comparison of volunteer data from previous years showed increases in hourly hiker traffic on Pemetic and Beech Mountains, and a similar hourly hiker traffic on Dorr and Gorham Mountains. Volunteer counts of dogs on and off leash over the past five years offer some evidence of progress in park efforts to educate visitors to keep their dogs on a leash while hiking. ...' The number of hikers reaching Sargent Mountain summit averaged 12 per hour or 63 hikers per day. Appendix 1 contains summit data sheets and instructions, appendix 2 contains volunteer summit report 1999-2001; appendix 3 contains hiker direction of travel 1999-2001 (volunteers); appendix 4 contains ridgerunners summit report 1999-2001; and appendix 5 contains hiker direction of travel 1999-2001 (Ridgerunners) /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Acadia Mountain/Beech Mountain/Dorr Mountain/Gorham Mountain/Pemetic Mountain/Sargent Mountain/The Beehive/Bernard Mountain/Champlain Mountain/Penobscot Mountain/
