FIELD WORK: May 30-Aug 12, 1997 'A baseline study of a non-native red ant, Myrmica rubra, was conducted at 35 developed areas on Mount Desert Island, Little Cranberry Island. and the Schoodic Peninsula within Acadia National Park during the summer of 1997. During 1,274 hours of trapping, at least 13 ant species were captured. Myrmica rubra was found at 23% of the surveyed areas and had the highest capture rates of any species. At five of the eight locations it was captured Myrmica rubra was the most abundant species. At two of these sites, it was the only species captured. None of the other species captured so dominated a trapping area. Based on limited habitat analysis, Myrmica rubra did not exhibit any specief habitat preferences within the surveyed developed areas.' This report contains descriptions of trapping mothods and habitat variables recordedas well as a hand drawn (not to scale) generalized map of the trap locations within the developed sampling areas.
