FIELD WORK: 1988-1994. Snowtracking surveys were conducted on 57 transects during the winters of 1988, 1989, and 1990. Scent-post surveys were conducted at 132 stations during 1989. Howl-response surveys were conducted at 97 survey stations during 1988 and 1989 Trapping and home ranges of coyote and red fox were assessed during 1989-90 and 1991-1994 This report provides background information on four sampling techniques for monitoring terrestrial mammals on MDI. The projects objectives were to evaluate these sampling techniques for documenting presence/absence, distribution, and relative abundance of terrestrial mammals in Acadia National Park. Analyses are provided for the applicability of using snow tracking, scent post surveys, howl response surveys, and trapping. Distribution maps of species recorded using the different survey techniques is provided. As an assessment of abundance, detection rates were established for each species for varying survey techniques. Species recorded using one or many of the above techniques include: Coyote, Red fox, White-tailed deer, Snowshoe hare, Red squirrel, Fisher, Otter, Mink, Porcupine, and Weasel. GIS maps of distributions are available within the report and on a CD, but point locations appear to be estimates and may vary in accuracy of 100 meters or more. Snowtrack survey transect coordinates and compass bearings are available in appendix A, but those appear to be the only field derived GIS information. /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/ GIS-Category 1 (see notes)
