Spiders (Araneae) of Acadia National Park Miscellaneous Collections, 2001

FIELD WORK: 2001 From Official Abstract: "During 13-15 August 2001, spiders (N = 255) of 11 families , 30 genera, and at least 35 species were collected from five sites within and near the Acadia National Park, Mount Desert Island, Bar Harbor, Hancock County, Maine. Most (74.1%) of the collected individuals were juveniles associated with adult females of Pardosa groenlandica (Thorell) and Phidippus purpuratus Keyserling. Fully 10 species not previously reported from Mount Desert Island were added to the araneofaunal list for the Island." Five main sites on Mount Desert Island were sampled and GIS coordinates are available for those sites and subsequent sub sites. Three basic collection methods were used including search, sweep-net, and beating cloth. Differences in spider-foraging guilds and sex ratios are noted. Some of these differences are said to occur due to multiage inventories and sampling methods. Table 1 provides species lists and numbers as distributed among male, female, and juvenile categories. 'In conclusion, a more complete araneofaunal inventory of Mount Desert Island spiders will require employment of additional sampling techniques over longer periods of time, and at ecologically diverse communities and habitats. /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/cadillac mountain/park headquarters/power line/sunken heath/thompson island/ GIS Category 1: GIS coordinates are available for sites.
