An Ecological Assessment of the 1600 Acre Parcel at Schoodic Peninsula

FIELD WORK : 1996 This report was developed by Woodlot Alternatives, Inc. as a result of expressed concerns by the public, environmental organizations, and the U.S. Park Service regarding a harvest paln on a piece of land adjacent to the park boundary on the Schoodic Peninsula. 'The primary purpose of the assessment was to provide the foundation for a conservation plan that allows current or future owners to apply sustainable forest management principles wihtout adverse impacts in adjacent National Park Service lands and visitor exsperiences...The ecological assesment offers an overview of the distribution of forest cover types and communities, structural complexity, associated wetlands, indigenous wildlife, and speicial ecological features. It also provides information in edaphic and other site-related characteristics that may be influenced by timber harvesting operations. Additional work was performed to determine the extent of potential viewsheds that might be affected from the approach to and from points within ANP.' Recommendations were made to help protect ANP form potential impacts associated with timber harvest in the study area. Several recommendations were made for the 1600 acre parcel of concern, some of these are: need for timber cruising and a management plan, recommended buffer zones, harvesting techniques, selective harvest techniques, and education of public concern to landowners. /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /SCHOODIC PENINSULA/
