FIELD WORK 1992 'During May - June of 1992 a National Park Service Level II site contamination survey was conducted in an area to the west of the Blackwoods Campground in Acadia National Park, Maine. The main region of concern is a privately owned parcel which has been previously used for dumping of building materials and the disposal of sewage sludge. Water and soil samples were collected at the disposal site and in the drainage area below the site during two surveys for analysis of heavy metal and nutrients. Concentraions of metals in the groundwater at the site contained concentrations as hish as 464.1 mg/l lead, 321.2 mg/l copper, and 292.0 mg/l nickel. Nutrients were as high as 13.0 mg/l for nitrate - nitrogen and 0.10 mg/l for phosphate-phosphorous. All fragments of asphalt concrete are scattered in the north portion of the site, but are not feasible for recovery and recycled use. In its present open condition the site does represent an environmental hazard, but if the basic foreign material were removed or properly covered, the environmental significance would be insignificant.'
