'The health of red spruce trees is adversely affected by exposure to acid fog. Plasma membrane calcium of leaf mesophyll cells is reduced and the redox state of glutathione is altered, indicative of oxidative stress. The needles of red spruce are more efficient capture surfaces than balsam fir needles, and concentrate the fog over stomates unlike the random capture seen in white pine. These differences may explain the greater susceptibility of red spruce to acid-induced damage mediated through fog intercept.'
