'Acadia National Park was suggested as a potential site for National Natural Landmark status in 1982 by Dr. Thomas Siccama (Siccama and Nierling, et al). During 1988 and 1989 a special cooperative project between the Maine State Planning Office Critical Areas Program and the National Natural Landmarks Program of the National Park Service was conducted to identifiy and evaluate sites within Acadia Natioanl Park as National Natural Landmarks. A comparative methodology was used to evaluate Little Moose Island, and island with arctic-alpine plant communities, in Acadia National Park in comparison with other known headlands and islands with similar plant communities in the New England-Adirondack region. The analytical methods follow the 1987 National Natural Landmarks Program Guidelines. The selection of Little Moose Island for National Natural Landmark status is based on the National Significance Criteria (U.S. National Park Service, 1987), which focus primarily on illustrative character, and present condition, and secondarily on diversity of ecological and geological features, rarity, and value for science and education.' Information on illustrative value, condition, diversity, rarity, and value for science and education is provided for each of the sites, with emphasis places on highest ranking sites. Sites included, but were not limited to, Red Head, Great Wass Island, Beals; Little Moose Island, Acadia National Park; Crumple Island, Beals; Mistake Island, Jonesport; South Libby Island, Machiasport; North Scabby Island, Machiasport; Petit Manan Island, Milbridge. There are also thourough descriptions of the native vegetation associated with endangered, rare, or special concern species.
