'Great Meadow and The Tarn at Acadia National Park (ACAD) were measured in 2001 as part of a regional project to characterize vulnerability of forest stands to invasion by unwanted plants. This is part of a larger study in which growing-season fire is proposed as a control fro clonal, woody invasive plants in the northeast and mid-Atlantic states. In 2001, we sampled fuels and species diversity at ACAD in an area of second growth trembling aspen that is heavily invaded with exotic plants including shrubby St. Johnswort, eastern ninebark, Asian honeysuckle, highbush cranberry, smooth buckthorn, and Eurasion grasses. We could find no portion of this stand that was uninvaded, so we also sampled in an uninvaded mixed woods at The Tarn for comparison. Both areas burned in the fire of 1947. Over all seven of the sites we have studied so far, we have found that invaded stands typically have a more abundant graminoid layer, while the duff and litter layer are often shallower.
