Acadia National Park: Revegetation Program 2001 Annual Report

FIELD WORK: 2001 The following from executive summary: 'In 2001, a total of 4.3 acres were revegetated in Acadia National Park (GPRA goal 1a1A). Seventy-one sites were planted, maintained, or monitored during spring/summer 2001. Seventeen new sites were revegetated using genetically native plants and seed. Additional work was completed at 15 previously revegetated sites, and 40 sites were monitored for revegetation progress. The goals for the revegetation projects include restoring native vegetation following construction and/or trail maintenance, mitigating safety concerns and visitor use degradation, and establishing screening. A total of 335 trees, 636 woody shrubs, 4740 herbaceous plants, 62.75 pounds of native grass seed, and one quarter pound of wildflower seed were planted. Plant materials were obtained via two interagency cooperative agreements (IA4500-00-02, IA0773-0-9001) between the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the National Park Service. The park received 60 pounds of grass and wildflower seed, 1654 container plants, and 4875 plugs propagated from seed or cuttings collected from park lands. Plant materials were stored at the Park's native plant nursery, which was actively maintained between May and October. Unused plants were over-wintered at the nursery. Volunteer groups gave 343 hours and the Acadia Youth Conservation Corps (AYCC), and Resource Management staff also assisted with revegetation projects. All sites were watered and weeded and, if necessary, fencing was maintained throughout the summer. Digital photos were taken to document current conditions at each site. At each new site, global positioning system (GPS) points were taken to add to the geographic information system (GIS) database of all revegetation sites. A map showing locations of all sites worked on in 2001 was made. To date, a total of 100 sites have been revegetated in Acadia National Park.' /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /ACADIA NATIONAL PARK/
