The Effect of Nitrogen Deposition on Nutrient Utilization in Streams
Osher L, Keats R, Kahl S, Culbertson C. 2000. The Effect of Nitrogen Deposition on Nutrient Utilization in Streams. National Park Service. Orono, ME
This is a project proposal that did not get funded. 'Project Synopsis: Atmospheric nitrogen deposition to forested ecosystems has the potential to change N limited ecosystems to N saturated systems, resulting in a fundamental shift in both terrestiral and aquatic N dynamics. We propose to look at four Maine headwater streams with differing levels of N deposition, each representing a different 'N saturation class'. By observing the utilization of N by organisms at the base of the food chain in these stream ecosystems we will identify changes in N processing resulting from the additional nitrogen. We will use stable C and N isotopes as tracers of these changes.'
