Jordan Island cruise report

FIELD WORK: June 2003 Following taken from a letter on page 2 of the report: 'The cruising of Jordan Island was completed in June of 2003. The cruising process was designed to get a 10% cruise of the island in a limited amount of time, with limited manpower. Therefore, we designed a cruise plan that visited each stand and attempted a 10% cruise of each one. The 300-acre island is delineated into 17 stands by the National Park Service based on aerial photography and soil information. Cruising was done in all stands, except those that were open field or in the immediate area around housing. We achieved a 10% cruise of all stands excet JRD 17, the large 175 acre matrix stand that makes up most of the island.' 'The cruising was done in conjunction with a University of Maine May term forestry calss (FTY 241), and cruising was done by those students. Cruising methods were outlined in order to accomplish a 10% cruise of the forest stands while also allowing instructors to check in on the students. The cruise plan was not designed to be a random cruise method, but with set up to collect data from each stand, and therefore may be biased.' 'Plot data was collected on both 1/10 and 1/20 acre plots. Information on species, DBH, height, and age was collected for all tree over 5 inches on the 1/10 acre plot, while data on saplings including: species, DBH, and height was collected n the 1/20 acre plot. Other data including canopy density was also collected along with qualitative data. Trails and structures on the island were located with portable GPS units and a number of pictures were taken.' 'Since then, all the field data has been input into the computer and inventory reports have been generated using FLEX, an inventory program created and used by the University of Maine. A number of maps have also been generated utilizing numerous sources. Maps have been generated with MapInfo, a GIS program, and are available in a digital format if you wish.' 'Attached you will find the finished inventory report. Included in this report are a number of maps including land, soil, stand, and cruise maps. You will also find information broken down by stand relating to species composition, stand density, and stocking and value. Stand data will also include information about health and vigor, quality, accessibility, age, and site index. In addition, you will find reports outlining possible harvest and operations plan for a harvest on the southern half of the island.
