Benthic stream macroinvertebrate monitoring report: Acadia National Park 2000-2002

From the introduction: "Standardized monitoring of biological indicators such as benthic macroinvertebrates is widely accepted as a useful component of long-term water quality monitoring programs. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has adopted guidelines for incorporating biological criteria into water quality assessments to augment more traditional hydrogeochemical water quality monitoring approaches (USEPA, 1989). The Maine Department of Environmental Protection (MDEP) has developed a standardized program of biological monitoring criteria to assess the integrity of freshwater ecosystems. Development of the MDEP program has been rigorously reviewed and refined, and is consistent with subsequent USEPA guidelines. National Park Service management guidelines also encourage the development of long-term programs to monitor the physical and biological integrity of park resources (NPS, 2001 ). In addition, the recently completed Acadia National Park (ANP) Water Resource Management Plan recommends incorporating biological monitoring criteria into a core long-term water monitoring program for the park (NPS, 2000). The establishment of a prototype benthic macroinvertebrate monitoring program at Acadia National Park began in 1997, when park managers consulted MDEP about participating in their biological monitoring program for Maine's inland waters. After reviewing MDEP biological sampling and analysis protocols, park staff decided to participate in MDEP's River and Stream Biological Monitoring Program (Gawley, 1998)."
