A brief survey of the Odonata species of Mt Desert Island, Acadia National Park, July 2004

Following taken from portions of the report: 'By permit issued by the U.S. Department of Interior / National Park Service, I was able to sample adult Odonata (anisoptera and zygoptera) during the week of July 3 - 10, 2004. However cool and inclement weather limited the survey to two days and only three locations were sampled during the week.' 'The methodology of the survey consisted of capturing adult Odonata with a hand aerial net. Terminal appendages, hamules, ovipositors and other identifying characters were examined in the hand with the aid of a 10x hand magnifier. Identification of some species were made in the field by observation of field marks through binoculars.' 'Most individuals were caught and released. Voucher specimens were taken sparingly, mostly for further confirmation of species identity. Vouchers were prepared in acetone, dried and labeled and presented to Resource Management of Acadia N. P. for the museum collection. Photographs of some specimens were taken...' '26 species: 12 species of zygoptera, 14 species of anisoptera. The number of species represents 21 per cent of total for Hancock County, Maine (MDDS). The small total is not surprising due to the relatively early date of the survey, the prevalence of cool and wet weather, small number of sites sampled, and limited available time in the field.'
