Acadia National Park Revegetation Program 2003 Annual Report

'Executive Summary: In 2003, a total of 27 revegetation sites were planted or maintained in Acadia National Park. Fifteen new sites were revegetated using genetically native plants and seed. Additional work was completed at 12 previously revegetated sites, four of which used plant materials donated by Friends of Acadia. Sixty-one sites were monitored for revegetation progress. Goals for revegetation projects include restoring native vegetation following construction and trail maintenance, visitor use degradation, and establishing screening. A total of 150 trees, 313 woody shrubs, 1455 herbaceous plants, and 77.1 pounds of grass and wildflower seed were planted. Native plant materials were obtained via a cooperative agreement (4500-00-03) with the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS). The park received 87.2 pounds of grass and wildflower seed and 1652 container plants propagated from seed or cuttings from park lands. Plant materials were stored at the parkÆs native plant nursery, which was actively maintained between May and September. Unused plants were over-wintered at the nursery. Volunteer groups worked 200.5 hours, and the Acadia Youth Conservation Corps (AYCC) and Resource Management staff assisted with revegetation projects. All sites were watered and tended throughout the summer. Digital photos were taken to document current conditions at each site. At each new site, GPS points were taken to add to the Geographic Information System (GIS) map of all revegetation sites. To date, a total of 128 sites have been revegetated in Acadia National Park.'
