'Bald Porcupine Island was used by the Navy as a torpedo and artillery target during WWII. Navy aircraft dropped experimental high explosive torpedoes which impacted on the sheer cliffs on the southeast side. In addition, Navy personnel in Bar Harbor practiced firing 40mm HE rounds from a gun set up on the town pier. Local teenagers used to row over to the island after firings to retrieve fragments from both torpedoes and artillery projectiles. The site was not used after the end of WW II. There have been no reports of live ordnance found on the island during WW II or since site closure. /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /ISLANDS/Bald Porcupine Island/
