Following from abstract: 'Geophysical, hydrogeologic, and geochemical data were collected in the Sieur de Monts area to assess different potential nutrient sources that may be responsible for algae blooms that occur in the spring house and spring pool at this site. Geophysical and boring data indicate a sand layer underlies a silty clay unit. The sand unit is mounded under a portion of the site, creating two basins filled with silty clay. Strong downward hydraulic gradients occur the southern portion of the study area and gradually shift to upward hydraulic gradients in topographically lower, northern portion of the study area. Lateral hydraulic gradients drive ground-water from both the north and south toward the spring house and spring pool. The presence of pharmaceutical compounds and nutrient in a deep well near the waste water treatment facility indicate that this waste water is penetrating deep into the subsurface. We suggest the downward migration of nutrients from the waste-water treatment facility into the underlying sand unit, followed by lateral flow toward the spring house and/or spring poor result in enhanced nutrient loading that stimulates algae growth in these surface water features.' ------------- Report is layed out in a journal format ; Attached to report are bore hole stratum descriptions data forms. /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Sieur de Monts Spring/
