European Fire Ants (Myrmica rubra) Influence Arboreal Insect Diversity

Verble RM and Pearson SW. 2009. European Fire Ants (Myrmica rubra) Influence Arboreal Insect Diversity. National Park Service. Bar Harbor, ME

Field work: 2009. Objectives were to measure the effects of Myrmica rubra on arboreal insect diversity in ANP by trapping and collecting arboreal insects in fire ant infested and uninfested patches on MDI and Schoodic Peninsula. No native ants were collected in study sites where M. rubra was present. Also native insect abundance was lower in areas where M. rubra was present. Research Recommendations: Efforts should be made to ensure that fire ants do not spread to Schoodic Peninsula. /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Bear Brook Pond/Miller Greenhouse/Visitor's Center/SCHOODIC PENINSULA/ GIS-CATEGORY 1 ; Contains a table of UTM coordinates for plot locations on MDI and Schoodic Peninsula. Table 1 lists the native ant species captured for each plot.
