Monitoring the abundance and distribution of the invasive Asian shore crab, Hemigrapsus sanguineus, on the Schoodic Peninsula and its effects on intertidal crab and bivalve populations

Phillippi A. 2006. Monitoring the abundance and distribution of the invasive Asian shore crab, Hemigrapsus sanguineus, on the Schoodic Peninsula and its effects on intertidal crab and bivalve populations. National Park Service

Surveyed 6 sites on Schoodic Peninsula for the Asian Shore Crab. Also conducted a tagging experiment with green crabs to examine daily movement distances. No Asian Shore Crabs were detected. Green Crab densities were from 2-5/m2. 73 green crabs were marked and only 7 were recovered 25 hours later and 8 were recovered 50 hours later. Research recommendations: Annual summer surveys should continue at the 6 established sites on Schoodic Peninsula. In addition, an algal survey should be added to this study. /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ / SCHOODIC PENINSULA/
