Assessed diversity patterns of bryophytes at 22 rock outcrops in upstate New York and coastal Maine. From Introduction, 'The role of rock type in determining bryophyte assemblages is well known (e.g., Smith 1982, Bates 1992, Cleavitt 2001). However, there may be deeperdifferences within the bryophytes that are less well understood. Current resultsfrom the NY State rock outcrop surveys (Cleavitt et al. 2005) suggest that rocktype influences absolute differences in species composition, and may haveimplications for separate evolutionary histories of the mosses and liverworts. Wepropose to test whether the following patterns hold for rock outcrops in Acadia: 1)Are leafy liverworts more prevalent and diverse on acidic rock types? 2) Areancestral thalloid liverworts restricted to basic rock types? 3) Are pleurocarpousmosses more dominant and diverse on basic rock types?' /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Mansell Mountain /ISLE AU HAUT/Duck Harbor Mountain/Long Pond/
