Following from abstract: 'Park staff conducted surveys and mapped locations of four exotic plants in Great Meadow in 2008; purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria), alder buckthorn (Frangula alnus), shrubby St. Johnswort (Hypericum prolificum), and amur maple (Acer ginnala). Staff established long-term monitoring transects and collected abundance data on each species. Three species (alder buckthorn, shrubby St. Johnswort, and amur maple) were also mechanically and chemically treated in Great Meadow. A total of $9,000 from the donated compensatory mitigation funds administered by Friends of Acadia was used in combination with other National Park Service fund to support this work in 2008.' Notes: No purple loosestrife was found in Great Meadow during 2008; 4 permanent transects were established for monitoring alder buckthorn, and stems over 700 stems were cut and treated with Garlon 3A herbicide and over 450 seedlings were treated with glyphosate herbicide; cut shrubby St. Johnswort in test plots to determine whether follow-up herbicide application is needed; 3 amur maple trees were cut and treated with Garlon 3A. /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Great Meadow/
