Funding the Natural Resource Challenge Report to Congress, Fiscal Year 2008

This document outlines the Natural Resource Challenge program and describes funding and measuring progress, park and regional resource management programs, network programs, natural resource preservation program, servicewide natural resource programs, and financial details. ANP is described in various localities throughout the document. It is noted in the park and regional resource management programs that several positions at ANP that were in part funded by the challenge are now vacant and cannot be rehired due to funding levels. Under network programs ANP is noted for its Schoodic Education and Research Center partnerships. Under servicewide natural resource programs ANP is mentioned several times for contributing to the large scale air quality monitoring network. In appendix E (Biological Resources), ANP is mentioned under the question of does ANP need a sea run brook trout management plan? Roughly outlined is a summary of the work that has taken place regarding preliminary investigations of sea run brook trout populations and the findings indicating an anadromous population. As well, ANP is listed among other parks as a location integral to ôSeagrass Condition Assessment Within the NPS North Atlantic Coastal Parks: Site Selection, Training, and Integration with National Programs.ö Research Recommendations: ôThe NPS Northeast Coastal and Barrier and Northeast Temperate Networks have identified seagrass condition indicators as a critical component of Vital Signs monitoring within northeastern region national parks units. The goal of this project is to develop a feasible and meaningful approach to seagrass assessment that will be applicable to parks with extensive seagrass resources (Acadia National Park, Cape Cod National Seashore, Fire Island National Seashore, and Assateague Island National Seashore). Work in FY 2008 included further development of a prototype monitoring plan for system-wide implementation, training NPS cooperators, and developing mechanisms for data input, management, and integration. In FY 2009, researchers will synthesize monitoring data collected during this protocol development study into a baseline assessment of seagrass condition in regional parks. Researchers will also prepare a protocol for way-wide monitoring of seagrass condition.ö As well this document, though not recommending particular research, outlined the sea run brook trout project: ôDoes Acadia National Park (ME) Need a Sea Run Brook Trout Management Plan?
