ANP is listed in the report as a park that will be in violation of the new ozone NAAQS based on current monitoring. 'Background: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued new, more stringent primary and secondary National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for ozone on March 12, 2008. EPS has lowered the ozone standard from 84 parts per billion to 75 parts per billion (ppb) for both the primary and secondary standard. The new standard is a significant enhancement to protection for both human health and for vegetation and other natural resources. The primary standard is set to provide better protection fro human health, and a secondary standard provides protection against ôwelfareö effects, including harm to native vegetation in protected areas. By Law, EPA is required to base the NAAQS on science, while providing and aadequate margin of safety; issues ralted to implementation of the standards are dealt with separately. Recommendations: More park units should consider issuing ozone advisories when 8-hour ozone concentrations are forecast to exceed 75 ppb. For rural parks, NPS will have to prove to EPA that the parks are violating the standard.
