Describes and evaluates the use of lake sediments and ombrotrophic peat deposits as long-term monitors for recording chronology and magnitude of atmospheric deposition of chemically nonmobile elements. Compares atmospheric deposition rates of lead, vanadium, and zinc as recorded in lakes sediments and peat deposits of Sargent Mountain Pond, Big Heath and Long Pond (Isle au Haut). States that accumulation rates for trace metals associated with fossil fuel combustion, smelting, and vehicle emissions can be determined by analysis of dated sediment cores from lakes, and peat core samples.
