'In this paper, two exploratory analyses are performed on sulfur concentrations measured at three national parks in the eastern United States: Shenandoah National Park, VA, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, TN, and Acadia National Park, ME.' 'Two separate trajectory-based analyses are used to examine the source regions which impact the fine ammonium sulfate concentrations at three sites in the eastern United States: Shenandoah National Park, VA Great Smoky Mountains National Park, TN, and Acadia National Park, ME. The first analysis, source contribution function analysis, is used to locate the source regions which impact each receptor site and to determine the transport pathways which are dominant when the sulfur concentrations at the receptors are extreme. The results of this analysis along with knowledge of emission rates are used to choose source regions which are then further examined with a source apportionment model. This model incorporates back-trajectory endpoint data into mass balance equations to solve for the annual average fraction of measured sulfur which can be attributed to each pre-selected source region. Results show that the source areas contributing the largest fractions of sulfur to Shenandoah, Great Smoky Mountains, and Acadia National Parks, are the Pittsburgh-Cleveland area, the Cincinnati area, and Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, respectively.' Methods:'Particulate data were collected as part of the National Park Service (NPS) particulate monitoring network which operated from 1979 through 1987 at approximately 35 sites. From 1979 through May 1986 two 72-hour duration particulate samples(à) were collected at each site each week.
