The spruce-fir forests of the coast of Maine

FIELD WORK: 1958-1960. Eighteen mature coastal spruce-fir stands between Kittery and Cutler, Maine, including 6 in Acadia National Park, are studied; stands are mapped, latitude and longitude are given, boundaries are not permanently marked. A discussion of each stand includes a description, a synthesis of data collected and qualitative observations. FLORA - VASCULAR: Quantitative tree sampling was done, reproduction, size class (DBH) distribution, frequency, density, and basal area are listed separately for each stand. Presence and importance value data by tree species is given. Tree cores, mean ages, age ranges, and heights for spruces over 8' DBH are given. Tree data results are discussed. Woody plant (shrub), herb, and pteridiophyte (fern) species are listed in order of importance value; densities and frequencies are given; percentage relative cover and quadrat frequency are indicated for each stand. FLORA - LICHEN: Lists species, major substrata, quadrat frequency, percent cover, and importance value for ground lichens in each stand. Lists corticolous species and substrates; species range comments included. FLORA - LIVERWORTS: Lists species, major substrata, quadrat frequency, percent cover, and importance value for ground liverworts in each stand. Lists corticolous species and substrates in each study plot; species range comments included. FLORA - MOSS: Lists species, major substrata, quadrat frequency, percent cover, and importance value for ground mosses in each study plot. Lists corticolous species and substrates in each study plot; species range comments included. SOILS: Systematic collections on Mount Desert Island include measurements of soil pH, soil classification, and soil chemical analysis (pH, organic matter, P, Ca, Mg, K, Mn, Fe, and Al). BIRDS: Lists relative breeding bird and winter bird density for each stand. MAMMALS: Small mammal trapping was conducted in each stand on Mount Desert Island and on Ironbound Island. Four species were trapped on Mount Desert Island and none were found on Ironbound Island. The Red-backed vole was the most frequently trapped small mammal in the spruce-fir study plots. INSECTS & ARACHNIDS: Numbers of Carabid beetles were estimated. AMPHIBIANS: Red-backed Salamanders were noted at Otter Point and Beech Hill (including some in the lead-backed phase). Spring Peepers were noted at Otter Point and Bass Harbor Head. REPTILES: Milk Snakes were noted at Otter Point and Beech Hill. SOILS: 4 soil test pits were dug in each of 5 spruce-fir stands on Mount Desert Island. For each soil horizon, measured pH, texture, structure, consistence, color, organic matter, potassium, magnesium, manganese, iron, and aluminum.
