The lichens of Acadia National Park, Maine

FIELD WORK: 1983; 1984; 1985 'Three hundred seventy-nine (379) taxa representing 103 genera of lichens are reported in this floristic study of the lichens of Acadia National Park, Maine, USA. Over 5,500 collections were made at 83 different localities. A breakdown according to lichen form includes: foliose = 90 taxa (23.7%); fruticose = 91 taxa (24.0%); and crustose = 198 taxa (52.2%).' 'North American distribution patterns are discussed and the percentages of the 379 taxa represented by each are as follows: Arctic-Boreal-Temperate (7.9%), Arctic (0.3%), Arctic-Boreal (10.0%), Boreal (11.6%), Boreal-Temperate (11.3%), Temperate (31.9%) and Indefinite (26.6%).' 'Within the park, lichen distribution patterns, as well as distribution maps of representative species, are discussed according to five patterns: Eastern-Northeastern, Western-Southwestern, Southern, Coastal, and Widespread.' 'Seventy-six (76) or twenty percent (20%) of the lichen taxa collected are considered rare, indicating they were found at only one locality within the park. A list of species found only in certain park units is presented along with a list of those species endemic to North America.' 'The most common lichens collected in Acadia National Park, in order of decreasing abundance, are: 1) Hypogymnia physodes, 2) Cladina rangiferina, 3) Parmelia caperata, 4) Cladonia squamosa, and 5) Parmelia rudecta.'
