From Abstract, 'The broad objectives of this research were to determine how the fossil remains of aquatic plants might be better utilized for reconstructing ecological conditions of the past.' 'To test the hypothesis that aquatic, vascular plants spread rapidly after deglaciation and responded to post-glacial climate changes, data from hundreds of North American pollen-stratigraphies were used to map the spatial changes in distribution of nine aquatic plant taxa over the past 12,000 years. Most vascular, aquatic macrophytes whose pollen is preserved in lake sediments achieved their modem geographic ranges almost immediately after the glacial ice receded, and showed little subsequent response to climate changes.' /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Hodgdon Pond/Lower Hadlock Pond/ Lake Wood/
