Physical Disturbance and Competition in Wave-Exposed Rocky Intertidal Communities in Maine

Grant WS. 1974. Physical Disturbance and Competition in Wave-Exposed Rocky Intertidal Communities in Maine. University of Maine

A description of the high intertidal zone on Mount Desert Island. The principal study area was located 100 meters south of Thunder Hole. Monitored distribution and abundances of benthic algae and sessile invertebrates over an 18 month period. Studied physical and biotic factors regulating community structure. Lists heights of the upper limits of barnacle colonization in the intertidal zone as well as disturbance, survival, mortality, settlement, and competition among barnacles. FLORA - VASCULAR: Abundances of 10 species of benthic algae were monitored. Studied the effects of fucoid algae on barnacle settlement. Protists: Notes that a light cover of diatoms appeared in April and May 1973 on the denuded study plots /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Thunder Hole/
