FIELD WORK: August 1985-March 1987. Study was conducted to define and quantify the ecological factors affecting the distribution and status of river otters on Mount Desert Island. Used sign surveys to determine otter distribution. Beaver signs were also monitored and houses and dams encountered were recorded. Otters typically inhabited watersheds where beaver were active. WATER QUALITY: Gives average height of stream banks, stream width, linear coverage, and average cover index along 33 watersheds on Mount Desert Island. Stream discharge was calculated for 35 watersheds /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND
