FIELD WORK: 1965 September - 1967 June. MAMMALS - DEER: A browse survey was conducted spring 1966 using the twig-count method. Eleven key species were measured on 720 sample plots located in 18 major cover types. Browse was not considered intensive on any of the species sampled. Based on food abundance and herd condition, present population was determined to be not too high for existing conditions. Notes that population has decreased in recent years and will likely continue to. Gives reproductive rates for yearlings and adults, and presents data collected on the physical condition of the 785 deer collected 1960-1967 during the deer reduction program. Sex ratios were also examined. Recommends larger plot sizes for browse survey, suggests areas suitable for additional exclosures, and suggests areas appropriate for more intense winter study.
