'This study was designed to demonstrate a direct relationship between leaf nitrogen levels and leaf chlorophyll levels in Ruppia maritima in response to artificially induced shading of incident light. It was hypothesized that the nitrogen required for the increased production of chlorophyll with shading would be derived from root/rhizome nitrogen pools. A parallel study of these dynamics along a natural light gradient was completed for comparison to the artificial study. Both the artificial study and the natural gradient experiments were conducted in the Bass Harbor Marsh estuary, Mount Desert Island, Maine, USA.' /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Bass harbor Marsh
