Phytoremediation: A local study

'...The focus of this project was to see if this technology (phytoremediation) could be used in cleaning-up a land parcel owned by the College of the Atlantic that is known to be contaminated with heavy metals. This parcel is located near Blackwoods Campground in Acadia National Park and was used in the past for the dumping of sewage sludge, construction materials, and other debris...After reviewing background research on phytoremediation and environmental policy regarding phytoremediation recommendations were given. Recommendations inlcude: the establishment of permanent sampling locations so the concentration and distribution of materials could be monitored over time, complete groundwater samples in order to compare with level II Contaminent Survey Levels, testing additional areas of the parcel for nutrient levels, and testing water and sediment samples taken from comparable sites (i.e. similar vegetation, geology, etc.) in and around Acadia National Park.' A map of sampling sites is provided, but no GIS coordiantes are available. The methodology for sampling techniques is provided as well as appendices containing specific information gathered about the site (soil chemistry, identified plants, copies of the contaminant surveys, etc). /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Blackwoods Campground (near)/
