Describes the geology of each potential site and judges them based on their qualities as a National Natural Landmark. 'Acadia National Park was suggested as a potential site for National Natural Landmark status in 1982 by Dr. Thomas Siccama. During 1988 and 1989 a special cooperative project between the Maine State Planning Office Critical Areas Program and the National Natural Landmarks Program of the National Park Service was conducted to identify and evaluate sites within Acadia National Park as National Natural Landmarks.' 'A comparative method was used to evaluate the Otter Cliffs shoreline, a granite headland in Acadia National Park in comparison with other known coastal granite shoreline areas in the New England-Adirondack region. Analytical methods follow the 1987 National Natural Landmarks Program Guidelines. The selection of Otter Cliffs shoreline for National Natural Landmark status is based on the National Significance Criteria (U.S. National Park Service, 1987), which focus primarily on illustrative character and present condition, and secondarily on diversity of ecological and geological features, rarity, and value for science and education.' /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Otter Cliff/ /SCHOODIC PENINSULA/ISLANDS/Great Duck Island/Little Duck Island/Long Island/Baker Island/Seal Island/
