To evaluate regeneration, growth, mortality, and stand dynamics of jack pine at two Acadia locations, and to present information relevant to decisions regarding the species"management in the Park. Contains a table with the results of soil samples of the jack pine stands in Acadia. Both sites show little soil development and the low pH's expected of soils on granitic bedrock with conifer overstory. The Schoodic site shows a greater accumulation of organic matter in both organic and mineral soil fractions, has a lower pH than Cadillac, and has significantly higher levels of potassium and magnesium, two essential nutrients, than Cadillac. Both sites show levels of nitrate that are near the limit of detection, indicating an important nutrient deficiency at these sites. Phosphorus is likewise barely detectable, especially in the Cadillac mineral soil samples; levels are significantly higher at Schoodic. Overall the organic samples show significantly higher levels of all nutrients than the mineral soil samples, indicating the importance of plant material, not bedrock, to nutrient levels for growth /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Cadillac Mountain/SCHOODIC PENINSULA/Schoodic Head/
