FIELD WORK: 1988. FLORA - VASCULAR: Jack Pine reaches its most southerly coastal location in Acadia National Park. Study describes the ecology of coastal Jack Pine stands. Examined age structure, dynamic of mortality and regeneration, and effects of competition with other species. Studied in detail the 300 acre stand on Schoodic Head and the 7 acre stand on Cadillac Mountain (notes that there are other small stands scattered over Mount Desert Island). Conducted 3 transects on Cadillac and 2 transects on Schoodic. On transects, all trees were identified, and diameter, height, and count of these were noted. Larger trees were cored. Notes that Schoodic stand is denser than the Cadillac stand. Cadillac stand is 50% Jack Pine, 23% Spruce, and 19% Pitch Pine; Schoodic stand is 58% Spruce, 40% Jack Pine, and 2% other. Jack Pine trees at Cadillac are concentrated in the younger age class while the Schoodic stand is older. Concludes that Jack Pine stands 'particularly Schoodic, will not self perpetuate without disturbance, particularly fire' /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Cadillac Mountain/SCHOODIC PENINSULA/Schoodic Head
