'In April, 1940, the first deer census of Mount Desert Island was conducted by the writer as the beginning step in a more comprehensive study of the deer populatins on this Island.' 'In a detailed report submitted September 6, 1940, describing the method and result of this spring census, the Moun t Desert Island Deer population was computed at 918 deer. A number of factors were involved in reaching this figure which prevented the attainment of a reasonable degree of accuracy. Consequently, the 1940 fall census was designed to eliminate these as much as possible.' A sample plot method was used to census the deer. Four representative sample plots were chosen. Population on Mount Desert Island is estimated between 690 and 1150, however margin of error may be as high as 25% /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Sunken Heath/Boyd Valley/Oak Hill/Somes Pond/Seal Cove Road/
