FIELD WORK: July 11 - 14 1972. INSECTS & ARACHNIDS: In the 1930's Beech Bark Disease, caused by a fungus that colonizes after Beech Scale infestations, was discovered in eastern and southern Maine causing tree mortality. Six Beech stands on Mount Desert Island were examined between July 11-14, 1972 for evidence of disease. Notes more beech stems per acre, fungi occurring occasionally on trees, and that highly defective trees abound.
