MAMMALS - BEAVER: Notes that beaver population has been increasing steadily since reintroduction in 1921. More animals are present on the western half of Mount Desert Island. Unspecified number of beaver on east side have been trapped and removed. Open season for fur trapping was used to check increases in population. Only two animals remain in the park and reside in Aunt Betty Pond. In response to a proposal to cut 50 acres around Bass Harbor Marsh, Johnson recommended that beaver flows continually be protected from human interference, including clearing in the name of fire hazard reduction /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Aunt Betty Pond/Bass Harbor Marsh/Marshall Brook/Buttermilk Brook GIS-CATEGORY 3 ; Mammals: Written description of a beaver flow south of Seal Cove Road with dams on tributaries of Marshall and Buttermilk Brooks
