FIELD WORK: October and November 1982, February, March and April 1983. A progress report for Kahl et al. (1985). Presents data from 19 lakes and ponds, and 11 streams on Mount Desert Island monitored to gain baseline data and assess the current impacts, and potential vulnerability of surface waters to acidic precipitation. A graph shows distribution of pH and alkalinity in October 1982 and during the 1983 spring melt. Compares lake pH data with that gathered by Fuller and Cooper (1946), and Norton et al. (1981) noting that data may not be directly comparable, but overall shows a decrease in pH values since 1946. Compares pH values for Fall 1982, March 1983, and April 1983. March values, just prior to ice-out, were consistently the lowest. The six monitored lakes returned to normal pH by April. Mean alkalinity for lakes monitored was noted as 72 ueq/l, mean pH was 6.36 and median 6.5 (not including Sargent Mountain Pond (4.6). Average alkalinity and pH for streams was 88 ueq/l and 6.47 respectively. Graphs show pH fluctuations in monitored streams during fall 1982 through spring 1983. pH varied as much as 1.5 units.
