FIELD WORK: 20 December 1965 - 20 March 1966. Factors affecting winter distribution of deer were studied by assessing: snow depth; understory density and canopy density; availability and utilization of cedar and other browse species; number of tracks crossing plots; percent of browse covered by snow; and slope gradient of each plot. Only understory density was statistically significant, although slope gradient had a significant impact on distribution. Availability of cedar on utilization was significant at Hadlock area, but not at Valley Peak. Browse production and utilization was measured by counting all available cedar bracts before, during and after the winter season on two sights in the area of Valley Peak and Upper Hadlock. Yearling hardwoods and shrubs were also counted /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Upper Hadlock Pond/Valley Peak
