Fire and the jack pine of Acadia National Park, Maine : a report of field observations

FIELD WORK: 21-24 June 1988. Evaluates the role of fire in the establishment and maintenance of Jack pine populations. FIRE: Using soil sampling he documents a fire on Norumbega Mountain in the late 1920's and a fire of unspecified size on Schoodic Head circa 1860-70. FLORA - VASCULAR: Includes descriptions of all Jack pine stands in Acadia. Notes that fire is not necessary in the establishment or maintenance of Jack Pine. Describes two diseases prevalent in the species: sweet fern rust, and pitch twig moth. Notes a die off of Jack pine at Schoodic Peninsula and presumes it to be due to natural senescence. Suggests monitoring rate of natural senescence in Jack Pine.
