FIRE: Reports that 204 fires burned on Mount Desert Island 1937-1983; an average of 6 annually, the majority caused by humans, five caused by lightening. More that 50% of the fires burned 0-.25 acres. A fire in 1879 burned much of Isle au Haut. Cautions that fire danger will peak on Isle au Haut in twenty to thirty years (2004-2014) as a result of spruce blow downs and drying. This paper also gives general history of fire in coastal Maine from 9000 BP to the present, and comments on the impact of weather and Indians on fire frequency, noting that large fires are often associated with logging /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND
