Status of Maine Harlequin Ducks 1993

Mittelhauser GH. 1993. Status of Maine Harlequin Ducks 1993. National Park Service. Gouldsboro, ME

'Two shore-based surveys of the south shore if Isle au Haut were conducted in the winter of 1993 revealing a mean of 131 harlequins. Significant declines are continuing (RSQ = 0.330, P = 0.02) in this wintering population (January to March, 1988-1993).' 'A total of 6 boat surveys were conducted in 1993 with 4 of these surveys in new areas. At present, most suitable harlequin wintering habitat has now been surveyed (1988-1993) from Metinic Island near Tenants Harbor to Head Harbor Island near Jonesport. Concentrations have been reported from outer Jericho Bay and outer Penobscot Bay. A new concentration (>75 birds) was discovered this year in the area from Schoodic Peninsula to Jordans Delight. The only other significant concentration of harlequins on the coast of Maine is in the Portland area where numbers are often reported on Christmas Bird Counts.' 'Urchin dive boats were observed or reported from most harlequin wintering areas from Millbridge to Penobscot Bay. Urchin divers dive in shallow waters close to the shore. This is often the same areas where harlquins feed. We observed harlquins being 'pushed out' of feeding areas by dive boats. It is unclear if this is having a negative impact on Maine's wintering harlequins.' /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /ISLE AU HAUT/ISLANDS/Black Horse/Black Ledge/The Cow Pen/Drum Island/Eastern Ear/Fog Island/Great Spoon Island/Green Island/Green Ledge/Heron Island/Johns Island/Little Spoon Island/Long Island/Mason Ledge/North Popplestone Ledge/Roberts Island/Saddleback/South Popplestone Island/Spirit Ledge/Western Ear/White Horse/York Island/Seal Island/Jordans Delight/Little Duck Island/Little Moose Island/Outer Bar Island/Petit Manan Island/Pond Island/Schoodic Island/SCHOODIC PENINSULA/
