Harlequins on the Coast of Maine: 1995 Progress Report

A total of 3 shore-based harlequin surveys were conducted at Isle au Haut during the winter of 1994-95. A mean of 138 (S.E. 5.0; range 126-147) harlequins were observed with an even sex ratio. 2.4% of the males aged were immature birds and 2.8% were subadult males. Three boat surveys were conducted east of Schoodic Peninsula during the winter of 1994-95; two surveys of the Sally Islands area off Gouldsboro and one survey of the down east coast. 'On February 8, 1995, counts of harlequins at Isle au Haut were made using four methods: shore-based surveys (two types), boat surveys, and air surveys. In addition, counts of harlequins in Penobscot and Jericho Bays were conducted using two methods: boat and air surveys.' Results are summarized. /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /ISLE AU HAUT/ISLANDS/
