From introduction 'In this study, the water chemistry data were compared for above and below road locations at several sites on Mount Desert Island, ME to determine the impact of road salt on surface water chemistry. A temporal comparison was also made between water samples taken during August 1998 and during March 1999.' From conclusion; 'Water chemistry obtained from sample sites in five catchments on Mount Desert Island from August 1998 and March 1999 suggest that road salt applied to roads during the winter months impact water quality throughout the year. These impacts include elevated Cl concentrations as well as increases in Ca+2, K+, and Mg+2; exchangeable cations derived from watershed soil.
