This grand application is for money to monitor the owl populations of Maine in an attempt to 'evaluate the most effective protocol for monitoring' and set up a volunteer monitoring network. We propose to conduct an owl research project that will provide distributional information on several owl species, evaluate the most effective protocol for monitoring, develop important educational materials on owl status and ecology in the park, and establish and test a network of volunteers to begin a monitoring program within the park. The results of these efforts also will serve as a "case-study" in developing a statewide database and monitoring program for owls to be conducted by volunteers. Because concern over the status and conservation of owls is not unique to Acadia National Park or to Maine, other northeastern parks and state conservation agencies willbe able to use the results of this project to develop owl monitoring programs for the benefit of this important group of birds and the enjoyment and participation of the public. /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/
