'To better understand effects of ozone on white pine and to obtain information on the responses to ozone of other species, a fumigation study was initiated in 1990.' 'A four-year research project was conducted at Acadia National Park to determine relative sensitivity to ozone of native species of plants. Thirty-two species were subjected to controlled ozone exposures using open-top chambers at a research site within the park. Species injured at ambient levels of ozone were spreading dogbane, big-leaf aster, black cherry, quaking aspen, white ash, and mountain ash. Red maple, pin cherry, mountain holly, and flat-topped aster may also be injured at ambient levels of ozone, but additional confirmation is required. Species which showed foliar injury at levels of ozone slightly higher than ambient were gray birch, small sundrops, and bunchberry. Paper birch, eastern white pine, pitch pine, red spruce, northern white cedar, northern red oak, Canada bluejoint grass, wild radish, and Canada mayflower remained uninjured at all levels of exposure. A field survey in August 1993 revealed virtually no visually detectable ozone injury in natural populations of seven species.' /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /ACADIA NATIONAL PARK/MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/
