'Ensuring the integrity of vegetative ecosystems within the national parks is an increasing concern for the USDI, National Park Service (NPS). In recent years the use of native plant materials for revegetation projects in parks has received increased interest. The USDA, Natural Resources Conservation Service's (NRCS) plant materials program and NPS have set a cooperative agreement to develop native herbaceous and woody plant materials for use in planting of disturbed areas within our Nation Parks. This nationwide program can help to provide genetic strains of plant materials that are native to an individual park. Once the species needed are identified by the NPS, the NRCS collects germplasm from selected niches within the park, increases the seed or produces transplants which are returned for re-establishment of native communities in the Park. The NRCS, Big Flats Plant Materials Center is currently cooperating with Acadia National Park in Maine, to produce plant materials for revegetating after park road projects are completed. This work at Acadia involves over 15 species of grasses, fortes, shrubs and trees. These native seeds and plants are being utilized in the revegetation work and has allowed the park to meet the challenges in maintaining genetic integrity of the plant ecosystem.' /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND
