'As we began planning for this conference in early 1998, we developed goals so that, as we asked speakers and set up panels, we would be able to share a consistent blueprint for the conference as well as be able to judge, at the end, whether we had fulfilled those goals.' 'FOUR GOALS FOR THIS CONFERENCE: • Goal 1 - To raise the level of awareness of Maine citizens and businesses about the possible consequences of climate change - globally and as it occurs in Maine. The 1995 report from the International Panel on Climate Change concluded that there was the beginning of "discernible human influence" on the climate - they will come out with a new climate assessment in the year 2000. • Goal 2 - To discuss the principal potential climate change impacts on various Maine terrestrial and marine ecosystems as well as economic sectors (such as agriculture, forestry, fisheries, tourism, human health, coastline development, and infrastructure) • Goal 3- To explore the various strategies to avoid and/or adapt to the potential risks and opportunities posed by climate change - identifying supports, barriers, market incentives, "no regrets" measures and educational tools needed to continue the process. • Goal 4 - To discuss how and when to take action when there is uncertainty'
